Building on the beginner brush lettering workshop where students learned how to use the brush to create the basic strokes that make up letters, John Lennig of Big Top Sign Arts returns with a level two session for those looking to build on their skills. Using the techniques covered in level one, John teaches you how to take the same brush to create the block letter, which is similar to the Bullnose, but has square corners on the stroke endings. This workshop will cover script, both slanting and upright, composition and layout, negative space, and the vital concept of B & L – big and little // bold & light (based on the book – Mastering Layout on the Art of Eye Appeal by Mike Stevens).
John will also discuss topics such as “Don’t go making up your own letter styles until you understand the fundamentals of letter construction”, materials, and if you have any specific questions, he encourages you to bring a list! For those that attended one of John’s previous workshops, please bring your #6 Langnickel Nocturna brush to class (a new one will be issued if you can’t find it).
You’ll take home:
Your take home project
A #6 Langnickel Nocturna brush
