Did you attend the screening of the Sign Painter movie last summer? Sign Painter, John Lennig from BIG TOP SIGN ARTS, will be at Got Craft? hosting a workshop discussing brush lettering in general and specifically the BullNose letter style, one of the most basic of hand painted styles. Consisting of 6 basic strokes, John will teach you how to create both upper and lower case letters as well as proper brush handling, brushcare, and the types of paints used. The first half of the hands-on workshop will cover the above, along with getting your brushes into the paint and practicing the 6 basic strokes. While the second half will move into letters and finish up with the creation of a few pieces to take home. “The Swoop” will also be discussed, demonstrated, and if time allows, be put to use in the finished pieces.

In this workshop, you will have the opportunity to use a small Kelsey 3×5 press. These tiny presses can fit on a table, and are good for working in small spaces.

Letterpress printing makes a unique impression that can be seen and felt. It excels at highlighting crisp type and lines on soft paper. Before offset and digital printing, all printing was done by letterpress – one letter, one line at a time. Newspaper pressrooms were full of typesetters skilled at reading backwards and upside down. High schools had a printshop and children were encouraged to learn this trade. But as technology changed, letterpress printing fell out of favour and many presses were recycled for scrap.

Currently, letterpress is enjoying a revival. People are charmed by the handmade effects of working with antique equipment and taking the time to make things by hand. You can find letterpress wedding invitations, posters, stationery, business cards – and now letterpress workshops at Got Craft?.

SMUG :: Pop Up Print Shop

For the upcoming holiday season, SMUG will be launching a Pop Up Print Shop upstairs from their Camden Passage store. This is the perfect place to find limited editions, open runs, screen prints, digital prints, letter pressed works and giclee prints for prices between £6 to £45. The same space will also house an exhibition of SMUG exclusive prints specially made for the show by some of SMUG’s favourite graphic designers and illustrators including Donna Wilson (swoon!) and Linus Kraemer, to name a few.

The Pop Up will launch on Saturday, October 29th and continue through to January. For every three or more prints purchased, you will receive a free SMUG cotton tote. If you are new to SMUG, check out the shop tour I did with Ana Maria here.

Congrats Lizzie and Gemma! Can’t wait to check it out this weekend and start crossing off some names on the holiday list!
