field trip :: baltimore, md part one

After being delayed leaving Heathrow to Ottawa, we missed our connector and ended up being rerouted from Ottawa to Toronto to Washington where we picked up our rental car and drove to Baltimore. Needless to say, we were absolutely exhausted by the time we arrived at our hotel, but it was completely worth it.

The Summit of Awesome was just that – awesome! An annual conference that brings together crafters and creatives from across the U.S. to learn, grow, and be prosperous in today’s economy. After meeting the ladies of Hello Craft at last years’ event, we were honoured to be invited to present two sessions at the event last week with our new friend, Rachel from Red Prairie Press and the Charm City Craft Mafia – Craft Fair Applications + Organizing a Craft Fair. For those that attended the talk or missed it, I will be posting my notes on here soon.

The event always offers an amazing line up of sessions presented by some of the most influential people in the creative field including Jay McCarroll and Debbie Stoller and Laurie Henzel from BUST magazine.

It’s hard not to leave the 2.5 day event without feeling inspired and a list of things to change / tweak / improve! We had a great time exploring Baltimore and meeting up with new and old friends! Thanks so much to Hello Craft for having us. You can see more images from the event on the Hello Craft flickr group here and if you ever wonder if investing in a conference like this is worth it, I recommend checking out this blog post by Isaac B. life :: a little of this + that

Our next round of guests arrive on Sunday morning, the same time that we are leaving for Baltimore which is a little weird, as we won’t actually see each other! We have been busy bees prepping the house and working on oodles of good stuff…

summit of awesome 2011

Last summer, Miranda, Robert and I decided to drive down to Portland and attend the Summit of Awesome. We had a few friends that would be speaking at the event plus Miranda had never been to Portland and really, Rob and I didn’t need an excuse to drive down there, so tickets were bought and suitcases were packed. I must admit that I’m not the biggest fan of conferences. I think I struggle with the idea of sitting still and having to listen for long periods of time, but I was wrong. This event changed everything. I had found my people!

Organized by Hello Craft, a non-profit association dedicated to the advancement of independent crafters and the handmade movement. They will be hosting their third annual Summit of Awesome from October 20-22, 2011, in Baltimore, MD and we are pleased to announce that we, along with Rachel Bone from Red Prairie Press, will be presenting two sessions at the event:

  1. Craft Fair Organizing
  2. Craft Fair Application Critique

The Summit of Awesome will bring together over 200 creative types from across the country – from the dabbler to the pro – to learn about the indie craft world, how to jump start their business, and sell their wares in this recovering economy. This 3-day event will include business seminars, craft education, and hands-on workshops. You can see a full line of speakers here including keynote Jay McCarroll, season 1 winner of Project Runway! Register for your tickets here!
